Our first ever event was our Beginner Music Camp at Downtown Sound in Logan, Ohio. Fourteen children aged 5-10 enrolled in this 6 hour day camp. Students from Ohio University taught classes in music theory, rhythm, movement, sound, string instruments, and bucket drumming.Â
Following the Logan Beginner Music Camp was a day camp in Stockport, Ohio of a similar nature. Twenty students aged 6-12 particpated in this camp. Ohio University students taught or assisted in classes that taught basic music theory, rhythm, and conducting. The skills learned in these classes were applied in instrument petting zoos, a scavenger hunt, bucket drumming, and creating our own musical instruments.
In partnership with the Ohio University Symphony and the American String Teachers Association, we held a Halloween themed instrument petting zoo at the WVSO-P Symphony of Screams. Music was provided by our string quartet before the OU Symphony concert.
This partnership with the Logan-Hocking District Library was the debut of The Appalachian Strings, our performance quartet. The Strings lead our audience through the basics of string instrument playing in an interactive performance of many recognizable Christmas tunes. Audience members tried their hand at conducting, played percussion instruments along with the quartet, and got to try each of the three string instruments that were being played during this performance.
After a full semester of working with Arco Strings in McConnelsville, Ohio, we showcased the hard work of our students and teachers in an end of semester winter concert. ASI helped organize and coach various chamber groups and the beginner string class that opened the concert. ASI musicians from Ohio University provided support throughout the intermediate groups' portion of the concert by playing with the students in their sections.
We were asked to return to the Logan-Hocking District Library for their "Cookies with Santa" event. A small group of 3 cellos and a keyboard played Christmas tunes while attendees enjoyed the various activities the library had to offer at this amazing event. We also offered the opportunity for attendees to try out each of three string instruments: violin, viola, and cello to recruit for our beginner string class starting in January.
Our Appalachian Strings performed at the Hocking County Community Fund Grantee Celebration where ASI President, Lily Chongswatdi, spoke of the work the organization has accomplished in Hocking County, Ohio. They played classical music while guests enjoyed hors d'oevres at the event.
The Appalachian Strings performed music from various time periods, demonstrating the evolution of musical styles. They played works by Bach, Beethoven, The Beatles, and more!
The debut concert of the Logan, Ohio Heart of Logan Beginner Strings class allowed the group to share the work they accomplished in the spring semester. The concert featured a a group performance of music from Essential Elements as well as small group performances of popular music.
Ohio University Conducting Graduate student, Brody Wiedemann, gave a look behind the curtain of the reality of orchestra rehearsals with the Appalachain Strings. This educational concert answered important questions like, "How do so many musicians stay together during performances?" and "Why is there a guy at the front waving a stick around?"
This concert showcased the work of the McConnelsville, Ohio Arco Strings groups as well as a number of ASI student coached chamber ensembles.
Following the recent Arco Strings Spring Concert, the group was invited to perform at the McConnelsville "Art at the Hardware" community event. They played the same show that they did a few night prior to event attendees at Morris Hardware
